Mile High Picnic
July 11 2009
A day trip and picnic This is an event that will get you HIGH. Over a mile high at 6850 feet! We’ll journey to the top of Calispell Peak in the Colville National Forest, have a picnic and head back home. The view from the top of this peak is unobstructed in all directions all the way to the horizon. We’ll have a picnic lunch, relax, enjoy the area a while and then head back down.
- Leaving Spokane area approximately 10:30 AM
- Gathering at the south end of the old theater parking lot (been vacant for a while) at the corner of North Newport Hwy and E Hawthorne Rd
- Vehicle “carpooling” required
- Vehicles with GOOD brakes and HIGH suspension REQUIRED
- 4WD is optional but suggested (I’ve made it to the top in my old 2WD pickup)
About the trip: For this adventure we will be carpooling in vehicles capable of the trip. No cars, no minivans, and no your Subaru Outback won’t make it. We’ll drive North out of Spokane about an hour on paved roads till just past Cusick. From there we will turn into the forest onto dirt roads. Once we hit the dirt we’ll stop and have a quick safety meeting for those driving. The next 10 or so miles is all dirt, rough, sometimes quite rough, and will take about an hour to reach the top. In places it is quite steep, somewhat narrow with few places to pass oncoming traffic (yea, there will be oncoming traffic both ways.)
After arriving at the top a quick and very important safety meeting for EVERYONE is mandatory! We’ll relax for a while, eat and then pack up. Drivers will have another safety meeting before we head back down the mountain and to home.
If you are interested in on the picnic sign up. Ideally we won’t take more than 4 vehicles (space is limited at the top – why? It’s the top of a mountain!) Will need other people to drive that have vehicles capable of making the trip. If you are wondering about your vehicle contact me and we’ll check it out.
