Mile High Picnic
July 11 2009
A day trip and picnic

This is an event that will get you HIGH. Over a mile high at 6850 feet! We’ll journey to the top of Calispell Peak in the Colville National Forest, have a picnic and head back home. The view from the top of this peak is unobstructed in all directions all the way to the horizon. We’ll have a picnic lunch, relax, enjoy the area a while and then head back down.

Leaving Spokane area approximately 10:30 AM
Gathering at the south end of the old theater parking lot (been vacant for a while) at the corner of North Newport Hwy and E Hawthorne Rd
Vehicle “carpooling” required
Vehicles with GOOD brakes and HIGH suspension REQUIRED
4WD is optional but suggested (I’ve made it to the top in my old 2WD pickup)

About the trip: For this adventure we will be carpooling in vehicles capable of the trip. No cars, no minivans, and no your Subaru Outback won’t make it. We’ll drive North out of Spokane about an hour on paved roads till just past Cusick. From there we will turn into the forest onto dirt roads. Once we hit the dirt we’ll stop and have a quick safety meeting for those driving. The next 10 or so miles is all dirt, rough, sometimes quite rough, and will take about an hour to reach the top. In places it is quite steep, somewhat narrow with few places to pass oncoming traffic (yea, there will be oncoming traffic both ways.)

After arriving at the top a quick and very important safety meeting for EVERYONE is mandatory! We’ll relax for a while, eat and then pack up. Drivers will have another safety meeting before we head back down the mountain and to home.

If you are interested in on the picnic sign up. Ideally we won’t take more than 4 vehicles (space is limited at the top – why? It’s the top of a mountain!) Will need other people to drive that have vehicles capable of making the trip. If you are wondering about your vehicle contact me and we’ll check it out.

Greetings!

Yes it is time, time to start the planning of the Sixth Annual Pagan Campout. It is very hard to believe yet oh so wonderful that it has been ongoing for six years. Many people and groups have attended, many new friends have been made and wonders explored. We would like to invite you to join in the fun and fellowship we all have enjoyed at this event. Spread the word about the campout! Tell your friends, post it on groups, message boards and any place you can think of - it will only make the campout bigger and more enjoyable for all! I hope to again see all my friends from near and far join us for the merriment we all have shared in the past.

The price this year is the same - just $10 per family!

So what is the Pagan Campout?
It is a gathering of pagans who want to enjoy some camaraderie together, have a few laughs, get away from the hectic lives we all seem to live and relax. The campout is not sponsored by any group or organization and has no agenda other than having a good time. Of course it is camping, in a tent, on the ground, in the woods, out in the weather, cooking over fires, swimming, hiking, exploring and doing whatever comes to mind. The Pagan Campout is what ever you choose to make it because, in the end, it is you who makes the campout.

Who comes to the campout?
Why pagans of course! Last years campout had people attend from all the way in Lewiston ID - 300 miles away. Those that attended came from various backgrounds, different beliefs and traditions. Some had lots of camping experience while others had none. One thing everyone who came did have in common was a great time and wonderful experience sharing their ideas and beliefs with others while learning new things for themselves.

When is the campout?
The campout is during the Summer Solstice again this year. We did this last year for the first time and it was a great experience for all those who participated so we are doing it again. Participation is optional of course; sometimes it is better to just sit back and take in what is offered in the sacred circle of nature.

Where is the campout?
The campout is at Beaver Creek Campground at the north end of Priest Lake. This is a U.S. Forest Service campground. Though many people do go to Priest Lake not as many venture to the north end where this campground is making it somewhat secluded. The group site that is used is separated from the rest of the campground and surrounded by tall wonderful conifers and leafy deciduous trees on three sides. Only a short walk, about 100 feet, from the open field is magical Beaver Creek. Some have even found small gems in the creek.

Family Activities

Maypole Dancing:
A Maypole will be available for the ladies to decorate and erect. A short lesson on Maypole dancing will be given just prior to the activity. There must be an even number of dancers and most preferably equal numbers of men and women. To participate you will need to bring a ribbon at least 18 feet long. Maypole dancing was a twofold event; to honor the union of the male and female aspects of spring and to rub shoulders with those whom were dancing.

Queen and King of May:
A lottery will be held to select the Queen and King of May. The Queen and King of may are honorary titles given to one lady and one man. During the day the Queen and King are to be honored by the guests as representatives of the Goddess Gaia and God Belenus.

Beltaine Ritual:
There will be a ritual to honor the return of the Sun and the courtship of the Lord and Lady. Theme will be spring, love and fertility. Help will be needed with this so if you are interested in helping out then please contact Sal – sal@jim.dynalias.net.

Spiral Dance:
A ritual Spiral dance will be held during the Beltaine ritual. There is a lot of meaning to the dance. If I can get this to come off properly everyone will pass by everyone else and the circle will be maintained during the ritual.

Beltaine Fire: There will be a Beltaine Fire, or fires, for people to enjoy. People will be encouraged to leap the fire if they desire.

Feasting: Sometime in the late afternoon we will have a community potluck. Participants are encouraged to prepare home cooked meals for the day. Make enough for yourselves and a bit more to share.

Readings: Readers of Tarot, Spirit Cards, Auras, Palms and other mediums are encouraged to come and share your talents with othes.

Adult Activities
Go a-Maying: This activity will start around 10:30 PM. Please do some research on this as not everyone will want to participate in this activity. Beltaine is the last of the fertility rituals and this activity is to celebrate that part of the holiday. Please contact Sal if you wish to know more about this.

Imbolc – making Brigid’s Crosses
Saturday, January 31
Noon to 5:00 PM

This will be more of a workshop activity. Shortly after arriving a crew of stalwart individuals will carpool out to the “reed store” to collect reeds. Those who want to collect reeds will need boots and may get wet in the process of collecting them. When we return, hopefully with enough reeds, Sal and Rusty will give directions on how to make Brigid’s Crosses. You’ll take home the crosses you make. It’s easy and anyone can make these. An especially good activity for children.

What to bring:

Bring snacks to share
You may wish to bring pipe cleaners or straws in case we can’t collect enough reeds for everyone
If anyone has access to straw (not the kind you drink through) one cake would be plenty to share with everyone to make them out of straw

Water, tea, and soda provided.
